The Human Chin – 12:44am Monday 30th June 2025
I noticed an article yesterday (Sunday) mentioning the human chin and questioning why we have it. I gave the matter some thought and concluded back in time, a strong chin would have provided an advantage.
For example, in a physical fight, a strong chin would be useful as an additional tool if your opponent lacked such a chin.
Also, a strong chin that easily reaches your chest, can hold a heavy object, in addition to your hands. For instance, climbing a tree would require your hands while your chin could hold or brace a heavy object against your chest. Plaiting a vine and other domestic tasks. It possibly absorbs some impact too, thereby providing some protection to the jaw and facial structure etcetera. Chins are very strong compared to other parts of the face.
So a nice strong chin and a not too thick neck, would be an advantage and as we know, that would make for an evolving beneficial trait/feature for humans.
It may also protect the neck/windpipe somewhat.
