The Asteroid Belt/s – Tuesday 22nd February 2022
I read an article just recently that made mention of the theory that the belt was remnants of a planet (a concept which is also part of my work) but that the quantity of matter wasn’t sufficient to make up a planet. I felt I should comment. In any explosion or critical impact you get pieces of varying sizes and depending on the explosion is,which way and how far those varying sized pieces will travel. As well, a significant portion is turned to dust. The chances of a shattered planet having the sum total of all its parts all land in the same region to make up a belt is very unlikely. Many larger pieces would have travelled off. A particularly large piece could find itself in the orbit of another planet. Mars’ second moon looks a very knocked about and mishapen large planetary remnant for example.
